Very Fitting

To Kirsty’s surprise the next shop that Jennifer took them to was a large department store. It was less surprising that they headed straight to the lingerie department. ‘Why didn’t we buy some of the stuff at the last place?’ Kirsty asked.

‘Because there’s something essential to do before we buy anything. Can you guess?’

Kirsty couldn’t, but soon found out when they approached a shop assistant. ‘Excuse me,’ said Jennifer, ‘could we get a bra fitting?’

The assistant seemed completely unfazed. ‘Yes of course, let me see if a fitter is available.’ She went off to the information desk.

‘What? I know what bra size I am. What are you doing?’

‘I bet you don’t.’

‘Of course I do, I’ve been buying bras all my life. I know what size I need.’

‘Fine, if you’re right, I will pay for anything we buy.’

‘Are you serious, what are we buying?’

‘A few new sets of nice underwear.’

‘That’s not cheap. What if I’m wrong?’

‘Then I get to pick what you buy, you pay for it, and you have to wear it. Only the new stuff.’

That didn’t seem too unreasonable a deal as long as Jennifer didn’t go crazy. The idea of there being actual stakes involved was surprisingly exciting. ‘Deal.’ Kirsty actually reached out her hand, feeling as though it made the bet official.

‘You are so cute.’ Jennifer shook it. ‘And you’re so going to lose. What do size do you think you are?’ Kirsty told her and Jennifer looked delighted. ‘God, I should have raised the stakes.’

‘How are you so sure I’m wrong?’

‘You totally double boob in most of the stuff I see you in.’

‘I do what?’

‘You spill out the top.’

‘Why didn’t you mention it before?’

‘I did once. You went bright pink and ignored me the rest of the evening.’

Now she mentioned it, Kirsty vaguely remembered that. ‘Oh, gosh, I’m sorry.’

‘Don’t worry about it, you are more than making up for it.’ Jennifer’s eyes sparkled as the assistant came back.

‘She can see you in ten minutes, just head to the desk then, if that’s okay?’

‘That’s lovely, thank you so much.’ Jennifer took Kirsty’s hand and they headed into the depths of the lingerie aisles. ‘This is going to be so much fun.’

While there were lots of very plain underwear on show, the women headed to the more elaborate selections, but nothing as extravagant as in the other shop. Once again, Kirsty felt drawn to the beautiful materials, surprised by her reaction as she’d previously disregarded anything like these. ‘What do you like?’ Jennifer asked her.

‘I have no idea. I’ve only ever bought bog standard cotton knickers and beige bras. They have a bit of lace on a couple of them, but even getting those felt like I was being extravagant.’ She reached out and tentatively touched a lacy bra in front of her. ‘These are beautiful though. I guess for a special occasion?’

Jennifer laughed. ‘Honey, those aren’t for a special occasion, these are just for every day. Those are for special occasions.’ She pointed down to the
